Singer-songwriter Levi Burkle is a powerful creative force in his Whidbey Island community. For the last few years he has pumped new energy, vision, and relevance into the local music scene, all the while mentoring a fresh generation of talented kids (as well as some motivated older students). The result of his efforts and inspiration was a March 14th album-release concert at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts that galvanized the community's understanding of what he's been doing, which is to raise consciousness in his little corner of the world. Levi's new CD is titled Maze, and its premise is to translate the songs Levi has inspired his students to write into full-blown, polished presentations. On stage at WICA, the result was powerful, compelling, and heartening. The audience was alternately transfixed and blown away, as the ensemble of friends and students proceeded on a picaresque journey through a world of mood and meaning that inspired a stampede to buy the record.
